Beginners Guide to using Canva

Guide to social media marketing graphics

Have you ever looked at someone else's blog or website and wondered how they manage to effortlessly created beautiful looking graphics and titles? I have often thought this and had the thought that it must have taken hours to create. Then I was recommended Canva …TA DA! A fantastic new website that allows you to create different graphics for social media, blog titles, website headings, presentations and much, much more all for FREE.

The easy to use templates are set to perfect dimensions for different platforms and websites, and with the help of thousands of extra images, shapes and graphics you can quickly create perfect images to compliment your blog or website.

Below I have set out a few easy ideas on how to use and get started with Canva.

Visit to set up your free account. Once you have logged in, you will see templates to choose from to create your designs, or if you have specific measurements you can create a custom size.

Here is an example of what you’ll see when you first log on. You can then easily choose the platform you want to create graphics for. This in my opinion is one of the great features of this website, you don’t have to spend ages working out the dimensions of your image and waist time uploading ones that don’t fit.

I've created a short video on how to create your first social media image, or follow the steps below:

Although a lot of the templates have great images, they are not always on brand. That’s why I like to find the templates with great text and layout and then swap the image for one of my own or a different stock image that I have found. That way I can be consistent with my branding but still quickly create the text layout I want. Here is the one I used for this blog header. I didn’t like the flower background so swapped it out with one of my own changed the text.

Once you have you image simply drag and drop it to fill the background. Most of the time Canva recognises that you want to use the image for the background and automatically drops it to the back. If not simply navigate to the toolbar at the top of the page, click Arrange > Back.

Once you have the image in place you can then make sure the text is the perfect fit for your branding. Click the text and easily change it from a choice of fonts to fit every style!
